On Friday there was no swimming lessons so we went to yoga at the church and then we went to Fossil Butte National Monument. It was a pretty drive--so green for Wyoming! There's still snow drifts in shaded areas, and since it was still snowing a week ago, there's been plenty of water. I just love driving in the emptiness of it all.
Fossil Butte!!!
Beautiful Elena!!!
It was a gorgeous day!
Chilly with the wind though.
Jubal just parked himself in front of the crocodilian fossil and stayed for a good long while.
They all finished their junior ranger booklets and were sworn in.
Then we had a picnic lunch at the picnic area. It was really pretty.
After we went to the Warfield Quarry and paid to dig for fossils. It's all part of one of the biggest fossil beds in the world, the fossil lake Green River formation. My kids and I smashed more than we recovered but they (the owners) didn't even really care. It was super fun although some kids were a bit distressed (sobbing hysterically) when they did not find as many as they thought they should be finding or couldn't get them out in a whole piece--it's actually really fragile rock. The kids and I really loved it--so much more fun than I expected. I definitely recommend it.
Our hour was about perfect though--I think the kids would have enjoyed longer, maybe two hours, but it was pay for 1 hour and then pay for four hours and I don't think they would have lasted four hours even if it hadn't turned cold and freezing by the end (darn WY weather).
Up at the top of the world.
The roads were fun!
Lots of sheep.
And some cows.
And wide open Wyoming scenery.
We stopped at the Kemmerer museum, but it was already supposed to be closed and the kids were wild by that point, so we didn't stay long. We saw a two headed calf and a one head two bodied lamb. That was the highlight for the boys.
Elena wants a buffalo coat.
Had to drive by just because.
Some of the fossils we brought home.It was a really good day.
