Villa de Leyva

Villa de Leyva is one of the most prettiest places in Colombia and if I was to recommend somewhere for touristy tourists to visit (ones who want nice hotels, delicious food, night life, shopping, etc), I would recommend Villa de Leyva.  It's Bogotá's vacation spot, well, Santa Marta would give it a run for its money, but being so close to Bogotá helps.  It's definitely a tourist town, and is kept very clean and tourist friendly.  The plaza is the largest colonial era plaza in all of South America.

I loved Villa de Leyva!!

Here's an arial view stolen from the web.

The cobblestone roads were so picturesque and all the preserved colonial buildings are lovely.
We had a lot of fun just taking photos in front of random doors.  These were actually the doors to the Instituto Alexander von Humboldt, which is NOT open to the public, sadly.  There is a little gift shop but any tours have to be pre-arranged and good luck getting a hold of anyone.

Can I just build a house like this?  Please?  It's so charming.

The infamous chivas, Colombian party buses, were definitely out and about on the weekend nights.
Tourist shops were everywhere and I dragged the kids into so many because I wanted to buy a ruana for myself, but I was being really picky.

Always somewhat alarming colonial art.

Yep, there was a million photos on the plaza.  I love every one.

The bougainvillea everywhere was so beautiful!
Leo did not love driving on the streets though.
